Diversity team brings awareness to oppression
Definition of Oppression: to subject a person or a people to a harsh or cruel form of domination.
The Tunnel of Oppression aims to portray different forms of oppression through visuals. Many people do not realize the impact of the things they say or do and the affect they have on others.
"We are trying to get people to realize that there is discrimination in America," said Astrid Diego, a member of Hallet Hall's Diversity Team. "By being silent about it, it's a way to allow oppression to happen."
The Hallet and Willard Hall Diversity Team put up the display hoping to make students realize the many forms of oppression that happen right here on campus. "A lot of students think that it happens around the world but not in America," said Diego.
Some of the types of oppression on display include:
• Homophobia
•Eating disorders
• Ableism/disability
• Religion
• Sexism
• Ageism
• Racism
• Classism
A lot of the content in the tunnel is graphic and of a sensitive nature; however, it conveys a powerful message of how people are affected by other's ignorance.
