Ghost stories of CU
'Tis the season to be spooked, and it seems students on campus are digging up reasons that suggest CU is haunted. There are two main buildings that students believe to be haunted: Sewall Hall and Macky Auditorium.
"The Sewall Hall Legend"
Some students say that before it was a residence hall, Sewall was a hospital. Some believe that the spirits of the people who died in the "hospital" still linger among the dorm rooms and occasionally spook CU freshman. "I think the basement is haunted, but I've never really seen anything creepy happen. I just get kind of scared when I'm down there," said Katie Iseman, CU freshman and Sewall resident.
"The haunting at Macky Auditorium"
Students have a little more historical evidence to believe that Macky Auditorium is haunted. On July 6, 1966, Lauri Jaquette was brutally murdered inside of Macky. The 20-year-old CU student was found dead in the organ recital room. Her blood was smeared on five of the six walls of the L-shaped room, and traces of even more blood reached as high as seven feet above the wooden floor. A janitor who worked in Mackey was later charged and convicted of the murder.
The room where Jaquette was found now serves as an office of a professor. Though some on campus believe the auditorium is haunted, there have been paranormal tests that show no proof of any haunting activity.
So is CU haunted? Probably not. But with the spook of Halloween in the air, ghost stories abound.
