Unusual CU Classes

By NewsTeam Boulde... - Posted on 22 October 2009

Most college campuses have that one unusual class that you have to take before you graduate and University of Colorado at Boulder is certainly no exception. CU offers classes like social constructs of sexuality, better known as “the sex class,” Harry Potter, the Lord of the Ring series, exploration of American history through baseball and even a French class taught through song.

With all of these interesting classes it’s difficult to choose one. Bethanny Henrikson, a senior at CU and engineering student finally has the opportunity to take one of these classes. Although Humanities for engineers or Shakespeare for non-majors seem practical who could pass up the opportunity to take the Harry Potter class?

Henrikson said, “I know it seems hard to believe that a college class can be based off of a fantasy book but the course description makes it sound like an interesting way to look at life.”

The course description certainly does that. "The Harry Potter books address the idea of conflict from a wide variety of perspectives: personal identity, class, race, morality, education, age, ambition and friendship (to name just a few). Through a close reading of all seven texts, we will explore how these various themes all interact with and against each other in the pursuit of larger questions of being, itself. That is, we will map out their philosophical and existential significance and how this is related to their popularity."

Henrickson said, “This would be so much better than Slavic Folklore.”

Henrickson understands that looking at her favorite series with a very critical eye and as homework will either make her love the series more or never want to read it again. That’s a risk she is willing to take.
