Buffs win over Georgia brings nostalgia of another win
It’s Saturday. Game day. The University of Colorado football team upset Georgia 29-27 for the win, but the team and fans at Folsom Field had another win on their minds: the 1990 Championship game.
“Leadership determines how high we can climb and this team climbed to the top of the national ranking,” said 1990 head football coach Bill McCartney during the half time celebration that marked the 20-year anniversary of winning the national championship.
Over 80 members of the winning team were present for the reunion, remembering an accomplishment that has never been repeated in Boulder.
The presence of the 1990 champions influenced the 2010 Buffaloes football team to strive even harder for a victory Saturday night.
“They set the standard for any Colorado team that followed. Seeing how much they still love this school and this team, I mean that definitely motivated us,” Outside Linebacker BJ Beatty said after the win.
Although the special gathering was nostalgic for the winning team members, Quarterback Tyler Hansen was also affected by the emotions of the evening.
“You see them tear up in the locker room before the game or the Friday before the game when they’re talking to us, and they’re tearing up, and they have so much pride to be a Buff. It makes you feel it and makes you want to play hard for them.”
This year’s football team may not be in line to bring home the national championship, but after spending time with the winning team they now have a new understanding of what it means to be champions.
